LATEST NEWS 18/3/2020 2.20PM
As you would have heard, there was a decision made this week (16th March) from Rugby Australia (RA) in relation to suspending all Club and Community Rugby until the first week of May 2020.
Whilst this decision is unprecedented and unfortunate, Vikings Rugby support the need to protect the health and safety of all our participants and their families during this crisis.
This decision means there will be no structured rugby training, games or group activities at Viking Park (or elsewhere) until further notice. This applies to all senior and junior rugby and as such includes our Generation Red Program.
In terms of competition start dates, resumption of training etc.. we will be guided by advice provided by the Government and the governing rugby bodies -Rugby Australia, the Brumbies and the ACT Junior Rugby Union. For now, all planned activities in relation to U16/U18 boys and girls Generation Red Program are postponed to a later date to be determined. In the short term, this includes the information evening scheduled for 18th March.
It goes without saying that the situation around COVID-19 is both complex and fast moving so please be patient as the situation is quite likely to change again. We will endeavour to provide you with as much information as we can.
For players in U18 age groups who attend Erindale College – at present there is still scope to train as part of the College Rugby Program as educational institutions do not fall under the RA jurisdiction in relation to their advice. As such, Vikings will look to tap into that program and offer additional resources to the Erindale Program. This will continue as long as school programs are still continuing.
In terms of communication for U16/U18 Generation Red Program, please stay updated with information provided on this page – you will also be receiving general information from Vikings Junior Rugby Union through their normal information channels, via the junior website.
This is new to all of us so your continued patience is appreciated. Please see below the statement of advice handed down by Rugby Australia.
Today, following a meeting of the National Development Panel, Rugby Australia along with the State and Territory Member Unions have decided to postpone Community Rugby until the first week of May, effective immediately. This recommendation covers Rugby matches, Rugby training and face-to-face Rugby education courses. Although this decision has not been made lightly, it has been made with the interests of the participants, families and the broader community as the priority.
In arriving at this decision, Rugby Australia and the Member Unions have considered public health information and the advice of the Rugby Australia Chief Medical Officer, Dr Warren McDonald. The group acknowledges that this decision is a more conservative approach then has currently been recommended by the Australian, State and Territory Governments. However, it has been made to provide clarity to the Rugby community in a challenging and disruptive time.
Rugby Australia and the Member Unions are fully committed to supporting the game through this difficult time and the decision will allow for six weeks of planning to deliver a modified season which will commence, at this stage, at the beginning of May. The modified season will vary at a local level to best support the needs of our local Rugby communities.
It is acknowledged that there are a variety of Rugby competitions underway and Rugby Australia will work closely with Member Unions to minimize this disruption.
It is not the intention for this decision to interfere with the non-rugby related activities of our Rugby clubs, such as operation of licensed facilities. Government advice should continue to be followed in this regard. Rugby Australia and Member Unions will also work to increase the opportunity for people to engage in online education to ensure our critical workforces are ready for the recommencement of community Rugby.
The National Development Panel will meet weekly for the foreseeable future and will review this position and communicate any updates regularly.
