Round 11 Wrap Up

Round 11 Wrap Up

On Saturday the Premier Grades journeyed across the border to play the Queanbeyan Whites, while our 4th Grade boys played RMC at Portsea Oval. 3rd Grade had a Bye. It was a disappointing day for our Premier Men’s sides, who were swept by Queanbeyan at Campese, but our ViQueens had a huge win in the evening time slot, and 4th Grade also recorded a massive victory to keep their undefeated season in tact. Take a look at the match report for each Grade below.

First Division 2nd Grade (4th Grade) v RMC

A captain led, disciplined display of Rugby allowed 4th Grade to put the sword to 2nd placed RMC in this top of the table clash. James ‘Bindi’ Erwin and Jayme Field had a cracking day on the pitch, both men scoring a hat trick of tries. Bindi alone contributed 20 points to 4th Grade’s victory. One player missing kick off due to a missed alarm couldn’t stop the Vikings, the Forwards putting in a huge shift up front to set the platform for the Backs to run freely. Carlos Marr was clinical from Flyhalf, directing the boys superbly. 4th Grade have the perfect mix of individual brilliance and team cohesion, and now sit 9-0 atop the ladder with three games to play. Things are looking good for the Vikings come finals time. Vikings 44 – 7 RMC.

Premier Division Colts v Queanbeyan Whites

The effort from the Colties was there against Queanbeyan, but the Vikings made some costly mistakes that the Whites capitalised on. Queanbeyan scored first within four minutes of kick-off, but the Vikings responded soon after with a try to winger Kye Pearson. The score remained locked at 5 all, but two quick tries to Queanbeyan in the last ten minutes of the first half saw the Vikings go into the break down 19 – 5.

The Vikings scrum performed better, but the line-outs were over-complicated and not executed well. The Vikings sought too narrow a focus, giving the Forwards several hit ups off ruck ball and not allowing the backs to play with the pill out wide. The Vikings needed a voice to control the game, and have an attack plan to move quick ball through the hands to the fast finishers when the opportunity was presented. A try to Willy Penitani put the Red Men back in the hunt, and then another to Kye Pearson gave the boys some hope, but it was Queanbeyan who would score last and seal victory. The Colties will use the Bye to reflect on a tough month of Rugby. Vikings 17 – 26 Whites.

Premier Division 2nd Grade v Queanbeyan Whites

With the view from the mountain looking good for a while, the Dirty Twos slipped back down after a strange game of Rugby out at Campese against a never say die Queanbeyan Whites team, who are building their own momentum at the pointy end of the season. It was three tries each, the big difference a lack of discipline from the Vikings that gave the Whites the edge on the scoreboard, and saw one Viking spend time in the naughty chair. Tupou Lolohea bagged a double for the afternoon, and may have scored more but the Vikings weren’t able to capitalise on some key opportunities. Bailey Goymer-Peak toiled all game and was rewarded with the Player’s Player vote and Coaches 3 points. The game will be memorable for the two Sione brothers, TJ and Faalelei, who played together in the front row for the very first time. Both boys combined on several occasions for some massive shots on the Queanbeyan attack. With younger brother Caleb coming through the Junior Vikings, the Sione dynasty is looking good! The Vikings now head into a Bye weekend this coming Saturday which is sorely needed. Onwards to Uni-North at ANU, where a fresh summit attempt will be made. Vikings 21 – 25 Whites.

Premier Women v Queanbeyan Whites

The ViQueens were tasked with stopping the white wash under the lights in the evening game, and given the result were well prepared for the challenge. On Saturday the ViQueens were able to work as a team and finally convert their game play into points. The Front Row of Lou Bush-Taliai, Livinia Samoa and Monique Henderson had some dominate carries that continued to put the Whites on the back foot, so much so that the Backs were able to show their attacking flair out wide and cross for several tries. The ViQueens dynamic sister pairing of Tabua (‘Boo’) and Milika Tuinakauvadra was the difference in the match, Boo breaking the line or kicking ahead to set her sister up for two tries. Veteran Sharon Waihape led from the front, showing the younger ViQueens how it’s done. Makayla Morris proved why she was a debutant for the Brumbies in 2021, tackling without fear, kicking tactfully and adding 16 points to the ViQueens total through a brace of tries and through her boot. The ViQueens now head into the Bye weekend sitting at 2nd on the Ladder, with four games to go. Watch this space. ViQueens 36 – 19 Whites.

Premier 1st Grade v Queanbeyan Whites

The Vikings endured a very physical and bruising encounter against the Queanbeyan Whites at Campese Oval, eventually coming up short to suffer their third loss of the season. The Red Men got off to a great start with Tom Watego crashing over for a try, after some controlled play by the forwards only four minutes into the game. The Whites struck back with a try of their own – however, Michael Oakman-Hunt broke his way through the Queanbeyan defense to score a try, giving the Vikings a 14-5 lead. With the Red Men dominating field position, Captain Seamus Smith sniped over close to the line for a try we’ve come to expect from him, Jack Evenden converting to bring the score to 21-5 at halftime.

The Whites opening the scoring in the second half with a penalty goal, but it was the Vikings who would notch the first try. Max Ravouvou, who had been buzzing all game for a meat pie, finally dotted down for one out wide to extend the lead to 26-8 with just over 20 minutes to play. Things can change quickly in a game of Rugby, however. The Vikings were reduced to 14 men following a red card, and then 13 men after a yellow card, which gave the Whites just under 20 minutes to mount a comeback. Well and truly in control of the momentum, the Whites scored three converted tries to take the lead with 2 minutes to go. The Red Men had one last attacking opportunity inside the White’s 22m, however they were unable to convert this into points, the Whites snatching victory. With the Bye this coming Saturday, the Vikings will regroup as they head into the final four games of the year and look to maintain their position at the top of the ladder. Vikings 26 – 29 Whites.
