15 Jul Vikings Rugby Round 15 Wrap Up
It was a quiet weekend for the Vikings, with all Grade bar 3rd and 4th Grade on a Bye. With the majority of the 3rd and 4th Grade squad attending the Sportsman’s Luncheon the night before there was due to be some dusty heads putting on their boots, but for the most part the squad dug in for another solid performance.
1st Division 2nd Grade (4th Grade) vs Hall Bushrangers
Even with Coach Manteena Lukins catching some sun in the Cook Islands, the 4th Graders turned up in force, although as previously mentioned, some in a very sorry state. From the get go the 4th Grade scrum was dominant, the likes of Matt Wafer, Ryan Slater, Robbie McNeill and Geoff Adam plying their trade to put the Vikings on the front foot. Andrew Dickson, who had had two big nights in a row, subbed himself off within 5 minutes of kick off due to a deadly hang over. Justice Henderson was again in fine form at Flanker, while Riley Banks was a welcome return to the 4th Grade line up, directing the side well from Scrumhalf. The 4th Graders had a solid outing, continuing to roll with a bit of momentum heading into finals. Vikings 20 – 0 Hall.

1st Division 1st Grade (3rd Grade) vs Hall Bushrangers
3rd Grade once again took the field with several players from 4th Grade backing up for a second match, and although the score line wasn’t in the Vikings favour it didn’t quite reflect the intensity and effort put in by the players after two games of football. Hall were on the front foot early, scoring a quick try after some poor defence from the Vikings. Hall would hold momentum for the majority of the first half, scoring another try for a two score lead before the Viking switched into gear through their powerful forward pack. The scrum was dominant and allowed the Vikings to work their way into the 22, and after a strong run and score by Joel Morris up the middle the Vikings found themselves within reach. The Thirsty Thirds were unlucky not to come away with another try at the end of the first half, but remained positive after a strong finish. However, partly due to many of the players doubling up and partly due to a general lack of fitness, the second half was all Hall, as they ran rampant over a tired Vikings pack. It wasn’t all sorry Rugby for the Vikings in the second half, though – the boys showing a lot of character by rolling up their sleeves and manning up in defence. This was led by Swanny Puteho, who had several nice shots on the Hall offence. A tough day for 3rd Grade, but a great spell considering the circumstances. Vikings 12 – 47 Hall.

And that’s a wrap for Round 15. It would be remiss of this writer not to mention that the Vikings won the boat race at the after match function, after being convincingly beaten in their last boat race with Hall. It is important to note that Ryne, Mitch and Brett Bowden made up 3 of the 4 drinkers on the boat – all three renowned for being terrible drinkers, particularly when required to neck a beer.
Next weekend, all Grades are back at Viking Park for Hagar’s Day. Stay tuned to our website and social media for game times and don’t forget to purchase your Hagar’s Day ticket by clicking here.
